What to Wear in the Competition Arena: A Guide for Men
Nov 11, 2025
I’ll be honest — I’ve never ridden a show myself (yet) but watched a lot of Dressage Tests as a Writer. But like a lot of us who ride for the love of it, I’ve always admired the calm, composed look of riders in the arena. There’s something about stepping out in proper kit — the clean lines, the quiet confidence — that sets the tone before you even take your first stride.
When I designed the Gallant Competition range, I wanted it to capture exactly that feeling: classic, understated, and built for performance. With the current relaxing competition wear colour rules, there’s now more freedom for riders to add personal style — but I think most men will still lean toward the timeless, traditional “uniform” that always looks right.
Here’s how to pull it all together.
1. The modern men’s show shirt
Your men’s show shirt is the foundation of your arena outfit — the piece that ties performance and polish together.
What to look for:
Crisp, structured design – A proper collar and button-front placket keep things sharp, even under a jacket.
Technical, breathable fabrics – Lightweight, moisture-wicking stretch materials keep you cool through long warm-ups and test rides.
Subtle branding and refined details – Covered buttons, clean seams, and minimal logos keep the look professional.
Gallant Show Shirt
Specifically designed for male riders, this men’s equestrian show shirt combines traditional tailoring with modern performance. A button-down cotton collar stays neat under your tie, while the stretch body moves with you and regulates temperature. Available in crisp white and competition whit and navy — both timelessly smart.
2. Breeches that mean business
Your competition breeches do more than just complete the look — they affect how you ride. On show day, you need performance, comfort, and style that holds up from warm-up to presentation.
Look for:
Structured fit with flexibility – A tailored silhouette for the arena, but with four-way stretch for total freedom.
Grip for control – Perfect balance between grip and movement; ideal for dressage and jumping.
Medium-weight double-weave fabric – Durable, breathable, and quick-drying — essential for long show days.
Discreet detailing – Keep it refined; no loud contrast stitching or big logos.
Gallant Competition Breeches
Cut from 4-way stretch, double-weave technical fabric, these men’s equestrian breeches are made for comfort and confidence in the arena. The mid-rise fit and clean front give a sleek, tailored look that works under a jacket or on its own. Available in Classic White , or Bone and Navy should you wish to mix it up
3. The tie: small detail, big impression
Even with updated dress code rules, a proper tie remains the hallmark of men’s competition style — especially in dressage, jumping, and eventing.
Stick with solid white, and avoid patterns or shine. A pre-tied option saves time and ensures consistency every ride.
Gallant Pre-Tied Competition Tie
An adjustable, pre-knotted tie made to stay put — clean, classic, and secure under your show shirt. It matches seamlessly with both the white and white and navy Gallant Show Shirts.
4. Jackets: subtle updates to tradition
While the new colour rules allow darker greens, browns, and blues, most male riders will continue to favour the classics: navy, charcoal, or black.
These shades flatter every horse, stay sharp in the ring, and give that timeless competition polish.
Coming soon from Gallant: a tailored men’s competition jacket — structured, breathable, and built to coordinate perfectly with the new show shirts and breeches.
5. The finishing touches
Your presentation in the competition arena is about precision — in your riding and your turnout. Every detail should feel deliberate.
Boots: clean, polished, and properly fitted.
Belt: plain leather, matching your boots.
Gloves: white, black or navy, classic, and close-fitting.
Hair and helmet: tidy and secure.
Confidence: the final essential.
You don’t need flash; you need polish.
6. Build your men’s competition capsule
A small, coordinated wardrobe means less stress on show mornings and ensures you always “look the part.”
Your men’s competition essentials:
2 x Show Shirts
2 x Competition Breeches
2 x Pre-Tied Tie
1 x Belt
1 x Pair of polished long boots
Optional: Competition Jacket
This capsule approach — mixable, versatile, and refined — keeps your competition look consistent and professional.
7. Rules may change, but good style doesn’t
Yes, you can now add more colour under changing rules — but classic always wins. True style isn’t about standing out; it’s about showing respect for the sport, your horse, and yourself.
Modern performance, traditional confidence. That’s what Gallant Equestrian was built on.
